POINT OF INTEREST

Chew Jetty

George Town, Malaysia

Stores, homes, temples, and fishing boats crowd Chew Jetty on George Town’s waterfront, the largest clan jetty that once made up an old Chinese settlement on Penang. Walk around the elevated wooden boardwalks that connect stilt houses, pick up souvenirs, and sample local snacks as you go.

The basics

Travelers already sightseeing in historic George Town should find it easy to add Chew Jetty to their itinerary. City tours regularly stop here for around 20 minutes to let visitors explore, shop, and take photos, before continuing on to local temples, street art, and heritage homes. Tours often visit the jetty in combination with Khoo Kongsi, thanks to the Chinese clan connection between the two attractions. Consider popping over to neighboring jetties to the north and south, too.

Things to know before you go

  • Entry to Chew Jetty is free for all.

  • The jetty is not wheelchair accessible or suitable for strollers.

  • Stores here mostly sell souvenirs and snacks.

How to get there

Walk around 10 minutes to reach Chew Jetty from George Town’s main ferry terminal, or down Gat Lebuh Armenian to spot many of the area’s best-known street art. Alternatively, a number of bus routes serve the nearby Jetty A or Jetty B bus stops. A simple red arch marks the entrance to the jetty, or look out for the neighboring Chew Jetty Café.

When to get there

While Chew Jetty is a public space and open at all times, plan a daytime visit if you’d like to browse its shops or grab something to eat. Get up early or stick around late for sunrise or sunset, as the jetties are known as a great viewpoint for golden hour views over the water; sunset is typically pretty busy, though.

The George Town clan jetties

Because it’s the largest and most intact, Chew Jetty is the most popular of George Town’s clan jetties, but it’s worth checking out other nearby jetties to see how they differ. Lee Jetty has a more residential look, with the fenced-off front yards facing the jetty boardwalk, while Tan Jetty is popular with photographers, thanks to its lone hut at the end of its long and narrow pier.
