The China Aviation Museum (Datangshan Museum is the largest of its kind in Asia. This huge facility, located in an old air force base north of Beijing, displays hundreds of aircraft and missile launchers of various makes, including various Russian and Chinese crafts, two British Spitfires, and a US Starfighter.
The basics
The China Aviation Museum makes for a great day trip from the city for aviation enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in engineering or the military. The collection features some 200 aircraft and 700 pieces of weapons and aviation equipment. Private half-day tours to the museum take care of transportation from Beijing and include a private guide who can tell you more about the aircraft on display. The drive to the museum takes about an hour from central Beijing each way.

How to get there
The China Aviation Museum is located at the foot of Xiao Tang Hill in Changping District, around an hour’s taxi ride from central Beijing. To reach the museum by public transport, take Line 5 of the subway to Tiantongyuan Station and then change to bus number 643.
When to get there
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, as well as Mondays if they fall on a public holiday. The museum lies off the beaten tourist track, but it’s still best to avoid visiting on Chinese national holidays.

The museum collection is housed in a former bunker built into the side of Datangshan Mountain on Shahezhen Air Force Base. As you’re touring the collection, take note of the nuclear blast doors that still remain.
