Chippewa Square
Chippewa Square, Savannah, Savannah, GA, 31401
Chippewa Square in the Savannah Historic District charms with its moss-draped trees, inviting park benches, and shaded walkways. Visitors will find a statue of James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia, but not the park bench from Forrest Gump; this prop from the 1994 movie has been moved to a museum. The square is much more than a film backdrop, though, and offers a place to rest and people-watch between visiting historic buildings, cafés, and boutiques in the surrounding area.
The basics
Chippewa Square is quintessential Savannah, a city that has rightfully earned a reputation for beautiful architecture and preserved historic sites. The square itself can be visited as a brief stop, though some visitors choose to relax over a cup of coffee or a picnic. It’s often part of local tours of the historic district, including ghost tours, sightseeing tours, trolley tours, and bike tours. Visitors arriving on foot often combine a visit to Chippewa Square with nearby landmarks including the Philbrick Eastman House and the Savannah Theatre.
