Clock Tower
10 Salisbury Road, Hong Kong, Hong Kong
Since its construction in 1910, the Hong Kong Clock Tower has become one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. The area in front of the tower, which was built to commemorate the railway line between Kowloon and mainland China, has become a popular hangout among locals, making it a great spot for people watching.
The Basics
As an important part of Hong Kong’s colonial history, the Clock Tower is featured on many sightseeing tours. Travelers can visit the landmark as part of a heritage tour, which typically explores the history-rich Central district, the waterfront of Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon, and Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong’s working-class neighborhood. Walking tours of the Kowloon district often cover the monument and provide a more intimate glimpse into the area than you’d get on a coach.
Things to Know Before You Go
The Clock Tower is a must-see for history lovers and first-time visitors.
A Hong Kong Declared Monument, the tower is right beside the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
Wear comfortable shoes if you’re planning to explore the Tsim Sha Tsui district on foot.
If you’re hungry, head to nearby Nathan Road for a large selection of restaurants.
How to Get There
Take the metro to MTR Tsim Sha Tsui Station and come out at exit E. Walk towards Salisbury Road, then turn right and take the subway (pedestrian tunnel) located next to the YMCA to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Turn right again and walk straight ahead toward the waterfront. If you’re disembarking the Star Ferry, follow the signs for the Clock Tower from the pier.
When to Get There
Day or night, the Clock Tower, which is flanked by palm trees and set behind reflective pools, is a photogenic site. Make the most of the monument’s close vicinity to the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade and watch the light and laser show that occurs every evening at 8pm. The light show is free to watch and lights up Victoria Harbour in a spectacle of special effects.
Attractions Close to the Clock Tower
Within a short walk of the Clock Tower are a multitude of top Hong Kong sights. Spend a few hours admiring Asian art at the Hong Kong Art Museum; take a ride on the iconic Star Ferry from the Star Ferry Pier; or pose for photographs with Chinese movie stars on the Avenue of Stars. During festivals such as Lunar New Year and Mid-Autumn Day, the Clock Tower is often used as a focal point for decorations and celebrations.
