Cogges

Witney, Oxfordshire, OX28 3SY

Located just a quick trip from Oxford, Cogges is one of the prettiest corners of the Cotswolds (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A Scheduled Ancient Monument, Cogges has over 1,000 years of history. Today, the area is a popular tourist attraction, thanks in part to its Grade II listed Cogges Manor Farm.

The basics

While no longer operating as an independent village—it is now considered part of the nearby town of Witney—Cogges still ranks among the Cotswolds’ major tourist destinations. Listed in the Domesday book, its heritage landmarks include Cogges Manor Farm (which features a 13th-century manor home, and is now a working farm and local heritage center), St. Mary’s Church, and the ruins of other medieval structures. Cogges has earned additional acclaim in recent years, thanks to its appearance on the popular television show Downton Abbey.

Cogges is included in Downton Abbey-themed tours, and often paired with visits to Highclere Castle (which is used as the location for Downton Abbey in the series).

Things to know before you go

  • Cogges Kitchen is located on site at Cogges Manor Farm, and serves fresh fare daily (tickets to Cogges Manor Farm are not required for entry).
  • It is thought that St. Mary’s Church predates the Norman invasion in 1066.
  • Cogges is a popular destination for history buffs, families, and those looking for a charming weekend escape from the big city.
  • Cogges Manor Farm includes child-friendly offerings, from costume dress-up and farm-animal feedings to lawn games.

How to get there

Cogges is located a roughly 1.5–2-hour drive from London via the M40. From Oxford, Cogges is a roughly 40-minute journey via the S1 gold and S2 gold buses. Alternatively, joining a group tour offers a stress-free way to visit the area.

When to get there

In order to tour Cogges’ key landmarks—including Cogges Manor Farm and St. Mary’s—it’s best to visit during typical daytime opening hours. Cogges Manor Farm is open daily from March–November. St. Mary’s is open daily all year long.

Downton Abbey

Cogges Manor Farm was used as the filming location for Yew Tree Farm (home to Mr. Drewe and his family) in the fourth, fifth, and sixth seasons of Downton Abbey. During your visit, look out for familiar corners that would have been immortalized on the small screen.
