Colaba Causeway

Shahid Bhagat Singh Road, Mumbai, India

Officially known as Shahid Bhagat Singh Road, Colaba Causeway is a major artery in South Mumbai, connecting the Colaba and Fort neighborhoods. Part of the street is lined with shops and stalls selling everything from nautical-instrument reproductions to budget fashion, and many visitors to Mumbai stay in the general area.

The basics

Colaba Causeway is a bustling place with lots of cafés, showrooms, and stalls. Many people come to this area to dine at one of its famous "Parsi cafés," historic eateries run by members of India's Zoroastrian community, while others pass through on their way to the nearby Gateway of India, the departure point for tours to Elephanta Island. Many city walking tours either meet on or near the Causeway or spend some time strolling along it.

Things to know before you go

  • Colaba Causeway is a must-visit for travelers who love to shop.

  • Wheelchair users will find narrow and crowded segments of the Causeway difficult to navigate.

  • Don't be afraid to bargain at the stalls along the street.

  • Drink plenty of water and wear sun protection when exploring Mumbai on foot.

How to get there

Colaba Causeway is in the heart of South Mumbai, and autorickshaw and taxi drivers will be able to get you there (make sure they use the meter). Some tours to the area include round-trip transportation from hotels elsewhere in the city. The nearest train station is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, about 10 minutes away by car.

When to get there

If you plan to do any shopping, aim for a morning visit to Colaba Causeway, when there aren’t typically as many crowds as in the afternoon or evening. Some vendors will also give you a discount if you come early, as getting a sale from the first customer of the day is considered lucky.

The Gateway of India

Most visitors to Colaba Causeway also spend time at the Gateway of India, one of Mumbai's most popular landmarks. This 83-foot-high (25-meter-high) archway was erected in honor of King George V's 1911 visit to India, and is a fine example of the Indo-Saracenic architectural style, notable for blending Indian, Mughal, and Victorian neo-Gothic elements.
