POINT OF INTEREST

Columbia Square

Habersham Street between East State Street and Est York Street, Savannah, Savannah, GA, 31401

Mature oak trees and a central fountain are charming features of Columbia Square, one of Savannah’s more peaceful historic squares. Beautiful preserved buildings and luxurious bed-and-breakfasts lure visitors to this neck of the woods, and the square offers plenty of park benches for people-watching or picnics. Shaded paths offer a place to relax during a wider exploration of the Savannah Historic District.

The basics

While there are many historic landmarks to see in Savannah, one of the most pleasant experiences can be finding a quiet square with an empty bench to read for awhile in the shade. Columbia Square offers just that, plus the chance to see its beautiful Wormsloe Fountain and nearby historic buildings, including the Kehoe House. The best way to see the area is on foot, and some historic walking tours of Savannah include this part of the city, offering context to the buildings, architecture, and people who shaped local history.

Things to know before you go

  • This compact green space is home to shaded paths that are accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

  • Visitors seeking to escape some of the Savannah crowds may enjoy some relaxing time at Columbia Square.

  • Don’t expect a playground for kids at this historic square, though there is space to run around.

How to get there

Columbia Square is bordered by Habersham Street, E. State Street, and E. York Street. It’s about a 10-minute walk from Savannah City Hall and the heart of downtown Savannah. Street parking is available, though limited; nearby public transportation includes a bus stop at E. Oglethorpe Avenue and Price Street. You can see the Savannah Historic District by walking, biking, or taking the trolley.

When to get there

Columbia Square is an inviting place to rest your feet throughout the day. Some visitors also use the green space as a place to picnic (there are affordable cafés and restaurants for takeout nearby). Spring and fall are popular seasons to visit Savannah; avoid the summer months if heat and humidity would spoil your travel experience.

Historic landmarks around Columbia Square

Near Columbia Square, visitors seeking a historic bed-and-breakfast may be drawn to the lovely Kehoe House, built in the 1890s. Other sights include the Webb Military Museum, displaying military artifacts dating back to the Civil War, and the Davenport House Museum, a 19th-century Federal-style house featuring period furnishings.
