Constitution Square (Plaza de la Constitucion)

Plaza de la Constitucion, Malaga, Andalucia, 29008

The heart of Málaga is the Plaza de la Constitución, a historic and vibrant public square. Dating back to the 15th century, this location is still a city hub; lined with bustling shops and cafés, this pedestrian-friendly area is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and curious explorers.

The basics

Formerly known as Plaza de Cuatro Calles (or the Four Streets Square), Málaga’s Constitution Square was once the site of the city hall. Today, it remains a dynamic meeting point for locals and visitors alike, serving as a venue for cultural, political, and religious events all year round. The square is enhanced by the beauty of the surrounding Spanish architecture, palm trees, and the Fuente de Génova fountain, as well as the energy of nearby cafés, which are great for people-watching and soaking up the atmosphere of the city.

Things to know before you go

  • Free of car traffic, the square is a great place to relax during a day of shopping or sightseeing.

  • Here you can explore buildings that once housed the Chapter House, Town Square, the Mayor's House and the jail.

  • Stop for seafood at one of the square's restaurants, where you can watch the world go by.

How to get there

Constitution Square is right in the center of Málaga's Centro Histórico, and you can reach it by walking the city’s main shopping street, Calle Larios. If you’re taking public transit, the closest bus stop is at nearby Pasillo de Santa Isabel.

When to get there

Málaga offers warm temperatures and sunshine throughout the year. The summer months from June to August are popular, while spring and fall bring milder temperatures and fewer crowds. You can visit the square anytime, but may enjoy it most for a pause during the day, or during one of the annual festivals.

Celebration central

Special times to see Málaga, and take part in the local culture in Constitution Square, are during Carnival, the Easter holidays, and the Feria de Málaga in August.
