Coombe Abbey Park
Brinklow Rd, Coventry, England
This sprawling park is home to gardens, lakeside paths, playgrounds, and bird-watching sites, and is especially popular for kid-friendly activities, hosted year-round, along with markets and other seasonal events. The 12th-century Coombe Abbey at the heart of the park is now a 5-star hotel.
The basics
Coombe Abbey has a long history: In the Middle Ages it was among the most influential monasteries in England. The Craven family of Warwickshire acquired the abbey in the early 17th century and owned it for over 300 years; in the 1960s, the Coventry City Council bought the estate and turned it into the regional park and luxury hotel it is today. People typically visit the park independently, so they can spend as long as they like enjoying the natural and family-friendly attractions.
Things to know before you go
Food and drinks are available at the Cafe in the Park, operated by the Coombe Abbey Hotel, as well as a kiosk and ice-cream parlor.
Cyclists are welcome; pumps and tools are available at the visitor center.
Barbecues, camping, and open fires are prohibited.
How to get there
Coombe Abbey Park is just east of central Coventry, outside the Eastern Bypass that encircles the city. Taking a bus is possible, but you may need to transfer half-way, and biking there is also an option. Driving is the easiest way to go, and there’s plenty of paid parking at the park—the fee depends on how long you stay.
When to get there
Some areas of the park are accessible 24/7, but others have different opening hours. The visitor center is open daily from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, and the main parking lot is open from early morning until late evening, though cars can still leave after its closure. You can visit any time of year, but since winter is quite cold in the West Midlands, be sure to wrap up warm for a winter walk.
Other parks around Coventry
Coventry is surrounded by parkland, making it easy to escape the city and get out into nature. The Wyken Croft Nature Reserve is a natural ecological conservation area built on the site of an old mine; the delightful Allesley Park Walled Garden recreates an 18th-century kitchen garden; and Brandon Marsh Nature Reserve is a must for keen bird-watchers.
