Cottesloe Beach

Cottesloe, Perth, Western Australia, 6011

Cottesloe Beach’s gentle waves and sugar-soft sand might make you forget that you're in the middle of a major Australian city. Cott, as it’s affectionately known, is one of Perth’s most popular spots for swimming, surfing, snorkeling, or sipping cocktails while watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean.

The Basics

As one of Perth’s prime stretches of sand, Cott features on just about every city tour, including half-day sightseeing tours and full-day tram tours that include Fremantle City. Clear waters and consistent swell make it a popular spot for body boarding, surfing, and swimming, and a series of offshore rocks and reefs offer snorkeling from North Cottesloe. The beach stretches for more than a half mile (1 km), so there’s typically plenty of space to spread out. Each March, the beach transforms into an outdoor gallery during the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Cottesloe Beach is a must-visit for sun seekers and first time visitors to Perth.
  • Don’t forget to bring sun protection, a beach towel, and a change of clothes.
  • The beach is patrolled by lifeguards during daylight hours.

How to Get There

Cottesloe Beach is around 9 miles (14 km) from Perth city center, halfway between Perth and Fremantle. Take a public bus from Elizabeth Quay Bus Station or a train from Perth Station to Cottesloe Station.

When to Get There

Cottesloe Beach offers a perfect place to cool off during Perth’s blazing summers (December to February), though the best weather for a walk on the beach is in spring (September to November). Avoid Sunday afternoons when the beach becomes crowded with local teenagers who walk down from the adjacent neighborhood.

Perth Beaches

Perth is blessed with 19 white-sand beaches. While Cottesloe is considered among the best, it’s certainly not your only option. Head offshore to Rottnest Island to swim at the sandy bottomed Basin, or enjoy some local flavor on family- and dog-friendly Leighton Beach. Mettams Pool tops the list for snorkeling beaches, especially on a clear day.
