POINT OF INTEREST

Coventry Transport Museum

Millennium Place, Hales St, Coventry, England

Cars, bikes, and motorcycles are the stars at the Coventry Transport Museum, a central Coventry institution that houses an enormous collection of vintage vehicles. While the museum attracts visitors of all ages, it’s especially engaging for younger guests, with plenty of educational and interactive exhibits for children.

The basics

The museum's collection includes around 300 bicycles, 250 automobiles, 120 motorcycles, and all sorts of motorist-related ephemera spread across 14 galleries on two stories. Highlights include an armored car from World War II, a penny-farthing bicycle from 1871, and a supersonic ThrustSSC that broke the World Land Speed Record in 1997. There’s also a 4D Land Speed Record Simulator, which gives visitors the chance to experience what it's like to drive at a record-breaking 760 mph (1,223 kph)—faster than the speed of sound.

Things to know before you go

  • Admission is discounted for seniors (age 60 and over) and students, and free for children age 4 and under.

  • Most of the Coventry Transport Museum is accessible for wheelchair users, but those wanting to visit Model World should ask for assistance.

  • On-site facilities include a gift shop and a café selling coffee and snacks.

How to get there

The museum is located in central Coventry, about a 15-minute walk from the Coventry Railway Station and a 2-minute walk from the Pool Meadow long-distance bus station. Bicycle parking is available in front of the entrance, and there are a few parking areas within a short walk of the museum.

When to get there

The museum is open Tuesday–Sunday during the day. It's closed on Mondays, except during bank holiday weekends. It’s also closed December 24–26, December 30, and January 1. Visit on a weekday morning to avoid crowds. If you do come in the afternoon, note that the last entry is 30 minutes before closing time.

The museums of Coventry

While you’re in Coventry, it’s worth checking out the Coventry Music Museum, a unique cultural hub with a special focus on 2-Tone, a subgenre of ska that traces its origins to Coventry. You can also visit the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, which has a large collection of art along with exhibits tracing the history of Coventry from the Middle Ages until the modern day.
