Coyoacan Market

Ignacio Allende s/n, Mexico City, Mexico, 04100

In the bohemian neighborhood of Coyoacán, this market is a feast for the senses. Stalls are piled high with fragrant street food and artisan crafts that represent the best of Mexico City’s cultural scene. Feast on loaded tostadas (huge deep-fried tortillas) or shop for colorful souvenirs such as hand-woven textiles and Frida Kahlo prints.

The basics

This is one of the city’s top markets—and not just because of its location in the Coyoacán neighborhood. While it’s most famous for its affordable textiles and vegetable stalls, it’s also a great place to sample street food and experience local life. Overcome the language barrier in the market on a private Mexico City food tour, or combine it with the cobalt blue Frida Kahlo Museum (Museo Frida Kahlo) on a culture-focused tour.

Things to know before you go

  • While some vendors might accept cards, cash is king in this market, so it’s a good idea to bring some small denominations of Mexican pesos.

  • Coyoacán Market is typically busy and crowded, so keep your valuables close and bags zipped securely.

  • The space between stalls is narrow, so the market isn’t recommended for those who dislike small spaces.

How to get there

From the historic center of Mexico City, take metro line 3 toward Universidad and get off at the Coyoacán station, then walk for 25 minutes to the market. You can also use rideshare apps such as Uber, which are popular in CDMX.

When to get there

Coyoacán Market is open from early morning to mid-evening. Visit first thing in the morning for a less crowded browsing experience. The busiest time at the market is around lunchtime, when locals and tourists flock here for street food.

Cultural highlights of Coyoacán

Thanks to the lives and legacies of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, Coyoacán has long been recognized as one of CDMX’s artistic hubs. Along with the Frida Kahlo Museum, other cultural landmarks to visit here include Rivera’s vibrant mural at Teatro de Los Insurgentes, and Museo Anahuacalli, home to almost 2,000 figurines depicting different pre-Hispanic cultures.
