POINT OF INTEREST

DB Museum (German Railway Museum)

Nuremberg, Bavaria

The DB Museum (German Railway Museum) in Nuremberg draws in train enthusiasts and history buffs alike. As one of the oldest railway museums in the world, it takes visitors on a journey through the evolution of rail transport. Visitors can see Germany’s oldest surviving passenger coach, a vintage train platform, and interactive exhibits such as train simulators and model railways, too.

The basics

Most travelers visit the DB Museum independently and will typically start exploring on the ground floor, which features the English coal wagon, then continue to explore the oldest preserved German railway vehicle, a replica of the steam locomotive Adler, and King Ludwig II's opulent train. On the first floor, you can see the luxury train of the German Federal Railway and the Waiting Room for the Most High. End with the model railway, a refreshment break at on-site restaurant Tinto, and the museum shop.

Things to know before you go

  • The rear exit of the museum has barrier-free access for wheelchairs and strollers. Also, the exhibition rooms on the first and second floor are barrier-free.
  • If you need to store belongings, there are lockers available on the first floor or cloakrooms at weekends.
  • It usually takes visitors around three hours to explore all of the exhibits in depth.

How to get there

The easiest way to get to the DB Museum is to walk from Nuremberg Main Station, which takes around 10 minutes. If traveling from other parts of the city, you can get the U2 or U3 underground lines to Opernhaus stop, which is a short walk away.

When to get there

The museum is typically open Tuesday to Sunday, from morning until late afternoon, and is closed on Mondays. Opening hours can differ on public holidays, so check ahead of your visit to confirm. Weekends and the summer months tend to be the busiest times to visit.

Where to go after the DB Museum

After visiting the DB Museum, you can continue the museum-hopping adventures with a trip to the German National Museum, which displays art, history, and cultural exhibits from German-speaking areas. The Nuremberg State Theater is also nearby, while Handwerkerhof Nuremberg is the perfect spot to pick up local crafts and souvenirs.
