POINT OF INTEREST

Deanston Distillery

Teith Road, Deanston, Doune, Scotland, FK16 6AG

Experience the sights, smells, and tastes of a working whisky distillery at Deanston Distillery, picturesquely set by the River Teith at the entrance to Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Housed in a former cotton mill, Deanston uses traditional methods to handcraft smooth and sweet single-malt whisky.

The basics

You can enjoy a range of tours and tastings at Deanston Distillery. Options include a guided tasting of a selection of drams, a visit to the warehouse where you can taste whisky straight from the cask, and a peek into the distillery’s production process. All tours include the chance to taste Deanston’s renowned single-malt Scotch whisky. Whisky enthusiasts can visit Deanston on a full-day, multi-destination whisky-tasting tour from Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Things to know before you go

  • Wear comfortable shoes (no heels or flip flops) as there are uneven surfaces in the distillery.

  • Visitors who book a tour receive a reward voucher that can be redeemed against a bottle of single-malt whisky at the distillery store.

  • The visitor center is accessible for wheelchair users and has an accessible restroom, but the distillery’s production areas aren’t accessible.

  • Designated drivers can take away a packaged 'driver's dram' to enjoy at home.

  • Free Wi-Fi is available in the visitor center.

How to get there

The distillery is eight miles (13 kilometers) northwest of Stirling, which is frequently serviced by trains and buses from Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as other major towns and cities. Stirling railway station is adjacent to the bus station, from which the No.59/C59 bus to Callander stops directly in front of the distillery.

When to get there

Deanston Distillery is open year-round, seven days a week, from mid-morning until early evening. Aim to arrive around 10 minutes before your tour or tasting begins to settle in and look around the visitor center. It’s worth allowing time for lunch or a snack at the distillery cafe.

Where to taste gin in Scotland

Scotland is famed as a whisky nation, but Scotch isn’t the only tipple made there. Scotland is also home to dozens of gin distilleries, including Deanston’s sister distillery Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. If you can’t make it to Mull, you can sample Tobermory Distillery’s three gins with a guided tasting at Deanston, which takes you through the gins’ production process and provides insights into each gin’s use of botanicals.
