POINT OF INTEREST

Degraves Street

Degraves Street, Melbourne, Victoria, 3000

Melbourne’s laneways—narrow, pedestrian-friendly alleys that divide up the central business district (CBD)—are a city signature. One of the first laneways in Melbourne, Degraves Street links the city’s fashion precinct with Flinders Street Station. Stop by for coffee, wine, snacks, meals, and shopping, or listen to the performers who line the bluestone cobbles.

The basics

It’s easy to discover Degraves Street independently—and many travelers do exactly that, soaking up its café culture at venues like Degraves Espresso and shopping for goodies such as notebooks and shoes. But you’ll also find a range of tours stop by here, particularly food tours and laneway adventures. The Degraves Street Subway underpass and the Campbell Arcade, which links Degraves Street to Flinders Street Station, was a popular street art destination before closing for building works in April 2022.

Things to know before you go

  • Degraves Street is just 330 feet (100 meters) long, so don’t plan on spending hours here unless you’re eating.
  • The Degraves Street Subway is set to remain closed through April 2024 while work is completed on a new underpass.
  • Degraves Street is wheelchair accessible, and there are accessible bathrooms at Flinders Street Station.

How to get there

A stone’s throw from Flinders Street Station, Degraves Street runs between Flinders Street and Flinders Lane in the heart of Melbourne CBD. The Campbell Arcade and the Degraves Street Subway are closed for a Metro project, so you’ll need to cross Flinders Street to get there.

When to get there

Degraves Street is a year-round destination—with heaters for outside seating even in winter—but the Australian summer (December–February) is a particularly good time to discover it. It’s at its liveliest on Friday and Saturday nights, though you’ll want to book tables ahead of time if you’re dining.

Melbourne’s top laneways

It’s laneways that put the soul into Melbourne’s CBD. Centre Place, across Flinders Lane from Degraves Street, offers the classic combo of street art and street food. Vibrant, ever-changing art makes Hosier Lane, a 5-minute walk east, one of Melbourne’s top Instagram spots. ACDC Lane, a little further east, is where the laneway scene began, its rock ’n’ roll heritage preserved in dynamic street art.
