POINT OF INTEREST

Delheim Wine Estate

Knorhoek Road, Stellenbosch, Western Cape, 7599

Family-owned with a history of social responsibility, Delheim Wine Estate produces wine that not only tastes good but makes you feel good about buying it. The Stellenbosch region has become known for opulence and luxury, but Delheim’s garden restaurant and rustic tasting areas invite you to make yourself at home as you sip the winery’s popular Pinotage Rosé and Spatzendreck dessert wine.

The basics

With a community vegetable garden, a creche for workers’ children, and free housing, Delheim Wine Estates cares for its community and the land. Travelers often visit during a wine tour of the Stellenbosch region and it’s a popular destination for those interested in sustainable winemaking. Learn about their waste-water irrigation techniques, commitment to indigenous vegetation, and pesticide reduction practices before settling down for a tasting or a lunch that highlights locally-grown produce.

Things to know before you go

If you plan to dine at the Garden Restaurant for breakfast or lunch, book ahead. Make time for a hike or a stroll through the nearby Greater Simonsberg Conservancy. Delheim doesn’t offer accommodation, but there are campsites and other estates nearby.

How to get there

Located 45 minutes from Cape Town by car, Delheim Wine Estate can be reached via the N1 highway. Take exit 39 and head towards the Simonsberg Nature Reserve. If you don’t have a car, it should be easy to find wine tours departing Cape Town that stop at the estate.

When to get there

Plan for an early afternoon visit to make sure you have time for lunch and a stroll, and visit from Friday to Tuesday to experience one of their more unique wine pairing options. The Stellenbosch area itself is best visited in September and October when the weather is mild, the days dry, and the summer crowds are yet to arrive.

A match made in heaven

Cupcakes and wine might sound like an odd combination, but Delheim Wine Estate has always been known for pioneering new ideas. This tasting experience pairs floral cupcakes infused with the flavors of the Fynbos region with some of Delheim’s award-winning wines. The Fynbos region is a small, yet biodiverse habitat, bursting with wildflowers and unique flavors.
