Deschutes River
Oregon, OR
Stretching through much of central Oregon, the Deschutes River—a north-to-south tributary of the Columbia River—has long been a popular spot for outdoor recreation. It's particularly known for its ample fly-fishing and white water rafting opportunities, and it draws droves of visitors in summer.
The basics
There are so many ways to experience the Deschutes River, be it from the city of Bend or from one of the many state parks and natural areas that protect segments of this wild river. It's a popular rafting spot, even for beginners. Companies offer guided rafting tours from riverfront communities such as Maupin, located about a 2-hour drive from both Portland and Bend.
Things to know before you go
Whitewater rafting tours are generally not accessible to wheelchair users.
Do not attempt to raft the Deschutes alone unless you and your group are highly experienced.
Tour operators generally provide everything you need for a safe and fun time, but you may want to bring a towel and a change of clothes.
How to get there
You'll need a car to visit wilder parts of the Deschutes River, especially if your rafting tour operator does not include a transfer service. However, the river runs through Bend, the largest city in central Oregon, which is fairly bicycle-friendly. It's not easy to get to from other Oregon cities to the river without a car.
When to get there
The best time to visit the Deschutes River is in spring, summer, or fall. Summer has the best weather but the biggest crowds. Visit in September after Labor Day when kids are back in school but the weather is still great for a more relaxed trip.
Bend Whitewater Park
If you want to experience the fun of whitewater rafting without having to commit to a rafting tour, head over to Bend Whitewater Park in the heart of the city. This park has three channels suitable for people of varying abilities and is popular for whitewater paddleboarding and kayaking, tube floating, and even river surfing.
