POINT OF INTEREST

Divorce Beach (Playa del Divorcio)

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Unlike its serene neighbor dedicated to lovers, this secluded, cheekily named beach is known for having riptides and tumultuous waves, making it suited for sunbathing but dangerous for swimming and snorkeling. Although the beach is known by name among locals and tourists alike, it's reachable only via boat—making it popular with those looking for a secluded, dare we say romantic, experience.

The basics

Many water-based tours pass the beach en route to the Los Cabos Arch and Lover's Beach, but few stop long enough to paddle or swim due to the dangerous waters. Outside of booking a tour, you can take a water taxi or rental boat to the beach, typically from the Cabo San Lucas Marina. The beach is ideal for sunbathing and relaxing with views of the Pacific Ocean, and has an often less-crowded atmosphere than other Cabo beaches.

Things to know before you go

  • Swimming is not recommended at Divorce Beach due to strong currents and large waves.

  • Bring your own food, drinks, and sun protection, as there are no facilities or shaded areas on the beach.

  • Boat taxis from the Cabo San Lucas Marina offer round-trip service to Divorce Beach and nearby Lover’s Beach.

  • Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to explore the rocks and cliffs around the beach, since the terrain can be uneven.

How to get there

Divorce Beach is only accessible by boat. Water taxis, which you can find at the marina, are typically affordable, while boat and glass-bottomed boat tours tend to cost more. Most water taxi services stop at both Divorce Beach and Lover’s Beach, and the ride is about 10 minutes from the marina.

When to get there

The best time to visit Divorce Beach is during the cooler parts of the day—early morning is best as the beach sometimes closes before evening. Weekdays are much less crowded than the weekends. Cabo’s beaches are enjoyable year-round, but the periods from May through June, and from October to November, sidestep the crowds of peak travel season while still providing good beach weather. August and September can bring unpleasantly hot and rainy days.

Booking a water taxi in Cabo San Lucas

There’s no secret to booking water taxis to Divorce Beach in Cabo San Lucas—or haggling, as most one-way trips cost about $10. Walk around the marina of Medano Beach, and odds are you’ll find a willing ride. Keep in mind that some taxis only go as far as Lover’s Beach, leaving you to handle the short hike to Divorce Beach.
