POINT OF INTEREST

Dresden Castle (Residenzschloss)

Taschenberg 2, Dresden, Saxony, 01067

Explore a Renaissance castle that dates back to the late 1400s during a visit to the Dresden Royal Palace. Once home to Saxony’s kings, today the palace houses the Dresden State Art Collections including the acclaimed Green Vault. Plan a visit here to learn about the building’s history, including damage from World War II bombings, and see a wide variety of art and antiques.

The basics

Built with an emphasis on defense, the Royal Palace has limited entry points and towering walls. After extensive damage during World War II, reconstruction began in the 1980s. The palace is now a popular landmark that attracts visitors with its museums including the Coin Cabinet, the Collection of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs, and the Turkish Chamber, among other collections and galleries. The palace also offers the chance to see how royals lived during the Renaissance. It is included in several city tours, including walking tours of Dresden’s Old Town.

Things to know before you go

  • The Royal Palace is a must-see attraction for travelers interested in art, architecture, and history.
  • Tickets for the Royal Palace are separate from the Historic Green Vault; combination tickets are available at a slightly discounted price.
  • Check the museum website for details on entrances that are wheelchair accessible.
  • Audio guides are free for visitors.

How to get there

The Royal Palace is located at Taschenberg 2. It can be easily accessed via public transportation; take the tram to the Dresden Theaterplatz stop. Combine a visit to the Royal Palace with an exploration of nearby attractions such as the Zwinger Palace and the Opera House.

When to get there

The Royal Palace is open Wednesday through Monday (closed on Tuesdays). The Green Vault is quite popular, but there are other collections in the museum that are often free of crowds. Summer and weekends are prime times to visit; explore the Royal Palace first thing in the morning for the most peaceful experience.

World War II Damage

The Royal Palace was almost completely destroyed during the bombings in Dresden in 1945. The historic Green Vault and some basement rooms survived the fire, but the building as it is seen today was reconstructed in the 1980s and 1990s. Learn about the reconstruction during a visit.
