Drosselgasse

Drosselgasse, Rüdesheim am Rhein, Germany, 65385

One of Rüdesheim am Rhein’s top sights—and one of Germany’s most famous streets—Drosselgasse has long been associated with the region’s winemaking traditions. Measuring just 472 feet (144 meters) long and 6.5 feet (2 meters) across, this historic cobbled street is full of wine bars, restaurants, and other entertainment venues.

The basics

Located right in the heart of the Rhine Valley, Rüdesheim am Rhein has been cultivating vineyards since it was settled by the ancient Romans, making this scenic town a must-visit for wine lovers. But in a destination known for its wine, Drosselgasse is an especially popular place to sip riesling thanks to the number of wine bars taking up residence here; combined with the half-timbered architecture and live music performances, you’re in for an ever-bustling scene. Given its accessible size, Drosselgasse is easy to explore independently. The street is also a highlight on Rhine Valley tours that stop off at Rüdesheim am Rhein.

Things to know before you go

  • Owing to its cobblestones, slope, narrowness, and crowds, Drosselgasse can be difficult for wheelchair users to navigate.

  • Be sure to come hungry: A number of venues along the street serve everything from snacks to hearty fare like duck breast and schnitzel.

  • One of the highlights of the street is the historic Breuer’s Rüdesheimer Schloss hotel. Head to the on-site restaurant, where you can peruse an extensive list of rare wines or try a selection from the house winery.

  • Want to drink local wine? The Rhine region specializes in riesling and pinot noir, although sparkling and late-harvest wines are also produced here.

How to get there

Drosselgasse is located in the heart of Rüdesheim am Rhein, linking Rheinstrasse (which runs along the Rhine River) to Oberstrasse, the northern border of the Old Town. While you can only navigate the street on foot, cars and taxis can drop you off nearby. The town itself is served by numerous ferries, buses, and the Rüdesheim (Rhein) regional train station, just a 7-minute walk from Drosselgasse.

When to get there

Drosselgasse is virtually always loud and lively, given its wealth of bars, restaurants, and live music offerings. It is most crowded during the summer high season and in late October when the town’s harvest festival is held; consider visiting during the off-season to avoid the worst of the crowds.

What to do in Rüdesheim am Rhein

While Drosselgasse is Rüdesheim am Rhein’s most popular attraction, it’s not the only thing to see in this wine-loving town. Other highlights include the Rheingau Wine Museum (located in Brömserburg Castle), the Klunkhardshof (a centuries-old half-timbered house), Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet (home to a large collection of self-playing instruments), and Eibingen Abbey.
