Durban Indian Quarter
Durban Indian Quarter, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, 4001
Immerse yourself in the culture and flavors of India—without leaving Durban—on a stroll through the city’s Indian Quarter. Home to the highest population of Indians outside of the subcontinent itself, Durban is known for its authentic Indian food and heritage. The Indian Quarter is where you can find cultural landmarks such as the Juma Mosque and Victoria Street Market.
The Basics
Known as Grey Street by locals, the Indian Quarter draws in locals and tourists looking to shop in the authentic Indian markets, enjoy Bunny Chow (curry in a bread bowl), and visit the Juma Mosque. You can explore the area on your own or book a sightseeing tour of Durban that includes the highlights of the Indian Quarter. Traveling with a guide ensures you don’t get lost in the hectic streets and narrow alleys.
Things to Know Before You Go
- The Indian Quarter is a must-see for culture enthusiasts.
- Arrive hungry—the food is one of the highlights of the district.
- Some narrow markets and alleyways are difficult to navigate with a stroller or wheelchair.
- The Juma Mosque can only be visited at certain times and modest attire is required.
How to Get There
Located in Central Durban on Dr. Yusuf Dadoo Street (formerly known as Grey Steet), the Indian Quarter is easily accessible on foot from the city center. If you are staying in a different part of the city, consider visiting on a guided tour so you can avoid navigating Durban’s hectic streets on your own.
When to Get There
The Indian Quarter can be visited at any time. But, to shop, dine, and catch the most action, visit midday on a weekday. The markets and Juma Mosque are closed on Sundays.
Visiting the Juma Mosque
Spanning multiple blocks of the Indian Quarter, the Juma Mosque is the area’s main attraction and one of the largest mosques in the Southern Hemisphere. You can admire the domes and spires from the outside, or visit on weekdays from 9am–4pm or Saturday from 9am–1pm to explore the interior. On Fridays, you can expect the mosque to be packed with local worshipers—it accommodates up to 6,000 people. To learn more about the mosque, visit on a guided tour.
