El Limón Waterfall (Cascada El Limón)
El Limon, Dominican Republic, 32000
The trails that lead to El Limón Waterfall (Cascada El Limón are towered over by mountains, and lined with coffee and cocoa plants. If the picturesque Caribbean landscape isn't enough, a crystal-clear natural pool at the foot of the falls provides a place to cool off after a mountain hike.
The basics
You can access El Limón Waterfall either on foot or horseback. A visit to the waterfall is a feature of many day trips, which typically depart from Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, and Boca Chica. Some tours combine a visit to the falls with time at Cayo Levantado beach, whale watching, or a zipline ride through the jungle, and most include round-trip transport from your hotel, which makes for a hassle-free day.
Things to know before you go
- The climb to the falls is strenuous and not recommended for young children or those with physical limitations.
- Don’t forget to bring a bathing suit, towel, sun protection, and insect repellant.
- Wear sturdy hiking shoes or sandals that you don’t mind getting wet and muddy, as there are several river crossings on the way to the falls.
How to get there
The falls lie at the end of a 1.5-mile (2.5-kilometer) trail from El Limón town. Most tours include transport, but you can get to the town from Punta Cana by taking a taxi or a gua-gua (local bus)—ask about the destination before you board.
When to get there
The best time to visit the falls is between March and May, when you’ll be sharing the trail with fewer people and will have the smallest chance of rain. June to November tends to be the rainiest season.
Best Waterfalls in the Dominican Republic
El Limón is considered among the most beautiful waterfalls in the Dominican Republic, but it’s not the only one. The 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua (27 Charcos de Damajagua) park in Puerto Plata features a series of waterfalls that you can jump from, slide on, climb, and swim. Salto Alto Lake (Salto Alto de Bayaguana) comprises three separate falls during the rainy season and is the easiest to access from the capital of Santo Domingo.
