Emerald Lake (Yukon)

Yukon, YT, YT Y0B 1B0

Known as the “most photographed lake in the Yukon,” Emerald Lake is graced with vibrant hues of green water. The unique colors—created by sunlight reflecting off a layer of white calcium carbonate on the lake’s bottom—set the lake apart from the many others that dot the Yukon. The novelty draws in road trippers traveling the Klondike Highway.

The Basics

Set at mile 73 (kilometer 117.5) on the Klondike Highway, Emerald Lake’s roadside overlook makes the ideal destination (and turn-around point) for people who want to take a day trip into the Yukon from Skagway, Alaska. A popular outing for cruise ship passengers (you can book a tour or rent a car), a trip to the lake includes the chance to travel over scenic White Pass, visit the historic town of Carcross, and admire the Yukon’s rugged mountains, all en-route to stunning Emerald Lake.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Emerald Lake is best viewed and photographed from its roadside overlook.
  • Plaques describing the natural phenomena enable visitors to learn what creates the colors.
  • There are no bathrooms, picnic areas, or other public services at the lake.
  • The paved turnout is wheelchair and stroller accessible, but stay alert—cars, RVs, and buses are frequently pulling in and out.
  • Food, camping, and gas can be found in the nearby town of Carcross. If traveling from Skagway, be sure to bring your passport for the border crossing.

How to Get There

Set alongside the popular Klondike Highway, Emerald Lake can be easily reached by car or on a tour. The overlook is located 73 miles (117.5 kilometers) from Skagway and 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) from Carcross.

When to Get There

Visit Emerald Lake on a clear day so you can enjoy the lake’s colors at their most vibrant. Midday typically provides the best lighting at the lake—in the evening the sun shines in your eyes rather than on the lake. The lake is typically covered in ice until mid-May, so plan your trip for late spring or summer to ensure a chance to see the colors.

What to See in Carcross

While en-route to Emerald Lake, don’t miss the opportunity to visit Carcross. The historic town is alive with First Nation heritage, gold rush history, and outdoor adventure opportunities. You can relax on the shores of Bennett Lake, admire totem poles, and shop for souvenirs. For an adrenaline rush, test your merits on the town’s world-class mountain biking routes, try sand boarding at Carcross Desert, or go kiteboarding on the lake.
