Ernie Els Wines
Annandale Road, Stellenbosch NU, Stellenbosch, Western Cape, 7600
South African golfer Ernie Els took a big swing with his winery, but it paid off in spades. Known for their full-bodied red wines which include Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends, the winery is home to a stylishly cozy tasting room that looks out over Table Mountain and the Helderberg Mountains.
The basics
The estate is an excellent option while touring the Cape Winelands—the restaurant and tasting room offer stunning views, while the farmhouse-style architecture makes for a welcoming, intimate feel. You can tour the modern wine cellar or browse the wine library while learning about the vineyard’s productions. Later, settle down for a tasting or hearty meal at the onsite restaurant. If you’re a sports enthusiast, be sure to check out the trophy room which houses a selection of Ernie’s awards.
Things to know before you go
If you plan to dine at the winery, be sure to check their hours and book in advance.
If you’re in a group of eight or more, reserve a spot in their tasting room in advance.
This winery doesn’t offer accommodation, but there are plenty of nearby options if you want to spend longer in Stellenbosch.
How to get there
40 minutes from Cape Town by car, Ernie Els Wines is a convenient day trip for those staying in the city. Head east via the N2 and take exit 33 onto R310. Turn right onto Annandale Road, and continue to the winery. If you don’t have a car (or would rather not be the designated driver,) you can find wine tours departing from Cape Town which include a stop at Ernie Els Wines.
When to get there
Visit during September as the weather starts to warm and the rainy season ends, leaving the Cape Winelands green and refreshed. There might be a slight chill in the air, but you’ll beat the oncoming summer crowds. During the off-season, tastings end at 5pm, so arrive for an early afternoon tasting and book ahead for lunch.
Time for tee
In keeping with Ernie’s sporting background, the winery offers guests the chance to practice their swing. A small chipping green beside the main building is available for you to practice your put, surrounded by the beauty of Stellenbosch and its rolling vineyards.
