Es Baluard Museum
Plaça de la Porta de Santa Catalina 10, Palma, Majorca, 07012
Built into the 16th-century Baluard de Sant Pere fortress in Mallorca’s capital, the glass-and-concrete Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Palma houses more than 800 artworks by Balearic and Mediterranean artists. Bounded by the fortress’ sea-facing walls, this sleek hub features everything from works by Picasso and Joan Miró to abstract sculptures.
The basics
Composed of airy indoor spaces and open-air sculpture terraces, the Es Baluard hosts art from the late 19th to the 21st century. The museum features on some Palma city, bike, and Segway excursions, some of which showcase its exterior and include access to its rampart viewpoints. For a super-easy visit that also covers other Palma landmarks, consider a hop-on hop-off bus tour that includes entry to the museum and other activities.

When to get there
The museum is open Tuesday-Sunday all year and closed on January 1, May 1, and Christmas Day. Opening hours are mid-morning to early evening Tuesday-Saturday, and mid-morning to early afternoon on Sundays. However, Fridays and weekends are usually fairly busy: To explore when it’s quieter, target Tuesdays or close to opening time.
Must-sees at the Es Baluard Museum
The Picasso ceramics steal the show at the Es Baluard. Head to the top floor to view this stunning 1950s-1960s collection of plates, jugs, and pitchers painted with human and animal faces.
