The Basics

Espaço Porto Cruz showcases all things port wine, traditionally produced in the Douro Valley region of Portugal. And, while it can be fun to come to the restored 18th-century building to sit on the rooftop terrace and try out some food and wine, many visitors opt for a guided tour and tasting. For true immersion into the port wine experience, book one of the activities on offer, including educational wine-and-chocolate pairing sessions and creative port cocktail workshops.

How to Get There

Espaço Porto Cruz is in Vila Nova de Gaia, just south of the city of Porto, on the banks of the Douro River and west of Luis I Bridge. The nearest metro stop is Jardim do Morro, about a 15-minute walk away.

When to Get There

Espaço Porto Cruz is open Tuesday through Sunday, but when you visit will depend largely on what activities you choose. Port tastings are held at 11am and 6pm, while cocktail-making workshops take place at 11am and 4pm. The 360º Terrace Lounge is open from 3–7pm, and lunch is also served in the lounge from May through September.

What is Port?

Named for the Porto area, port is a type of fortified red wine, or a wine created in the same style. True port is made from grapes grown in the Douro region mixed with a grape spirit calledaguardentem that stops the fermentation process and results in a sweet, boozy beverage. It’s typically served with cheese or nuts.
