Estadio Olímpico Universitario
Av. de los Insurgentes Sur S/N, Mexico City, Mexico, 04510
Once the largest stadium in Mexico, Estadio Olímpico Universitario was built for the Pan American games in 1955. While it’s now the second-biggest stadium in the country, the sporting venue is one of the world’s only UNESCO World Heritage-listed stadiums, thanks to being part of the Central University City Campus of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).
The basics
Highlights of the Estadio Olímpico Universitario include its 20th-century, modernist architecture and a mural by celebrated Mexican artist Diego Riviera on its eastern side. The stadium is home to the Pumas, a professional soccer team, so you can buy tickets to watch a match if one is on when you visit CDMX. Estadio Olímpico Universitario and the wider UNAM campus sometimes feature on architecture and art tours of the capital, particularly those focusing on Diego Riviera.
Things to know before you go
There’s an on-site store at the stadium where you can buy jerseys and other souvenirs.
Restrooms and food vendors are available at the stadium.
If you’re visiting on match day, you’ll have to undergo security checks before you visit the stadium.
How to get there
From the historic center of CDMX, you can either drive or take the metro to Estadio Olímpico Universitario. By car or rideshares, follow Avenida Insurgentes Sur south until the stadium appears. You can also take the Metrobus Line ; get off at the Dr. Gálvez stop and walk for about 10 minutes to reach the stadium.
When to get there
The best time to visit Estadio Olímpico Universitario is when the Pumas are playing; you can find the fixtures on the stadium’s official website. The stadium also hosts concerts and other big-crowd events. CDMX’s summer months of December to February typically offer the best weather.
What to see in UNAM
Estadio Olímpico Universitario isn’t the only building worth seeing at the UNESCO World Heritage Site nicknamed Ciudad Universitaria (University City). Murals by Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Juan O’Gorman decorate some of the main structures, while the University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC) and Sculpture Park showcase modern art.
