Exotic Animal World

R44, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 7600

At Exotic Animal World, zookeepers care for hundreds of rare and exotic animals that have been surrendered or seized by the authorities. Lemurs and colorful birds move freely through a pretty indoor tropical garden and the reptile house is home to plenty of tortoises and jewel-bright snakes.

The basics

Exotic Animal World is perfect for a rainy day outing with kids. There are indoor enclosures to view and lots of unique animals on display. Weekend visitors might get a chance to take in one of the live animal demonstrations, where zookeepers teach about the different unusual species that call the sanctuary home. Set apart from the indoor garden, the rooftop aviary is home to birds and guinea pigs.

Things to know before you go

  • Exotic Animal World used to be focused on exotic butterflies, but today there are no longer any butterflies on display.

  • Although there are plenty of free-roaming animals that might come and interact with you, you aren’t permitted to try to touch the animals first.

  • The animals on display at the sanctuary change over time, as all animals are rescued and the sanctuary doesn’t breed them.

How to get there

It’s a 40-minute drive from Cape Town via the N1 highway, right near the town of Klapmuts. You’ll also find several vineyards in the region and other attractions including waterparks and animal sanctuaries. It’s difficult to reach via public transit, but you might be able to get there on a guided tour of the region.

When to get there

Open seven days a week, aim for a weekend visit so you can check out one of the interactive animal displays, which tend to run at 11am and 2pm. More of these displays are held during school and public holidays, but those days tend to be busier. The summer on the Western Cape (from December to March) is a great time of year to visit, with plenty of sun and warm weather.

Where to grab a bite at the park

After wandering the sanctuary, enjoy lunch at Café Lemur, where tasty cakes and sandwiches are served in a rustic farmhouse-style dining area with plenty of tropical plants. Outside the cafe’s large windows, lemurs, parrots, and chinchillas play, so guests can have lunch and a show.
