Fergusson Winery
82 Wills Road, Yarra Glen, Victoria, 3775
The first vines were planted at Fergusson Winery more than half a century ago, and it’s since made a name for itself producing fine Yarra Valley wines. Today, the family-run winery sits amid 20 acres (8 hectares) of rolling vineyards, where you can enjoy wine tastings and dine on seasonal Italian cuisine at the winery restaurant.
The basics
Fergusson Winery is a popular inclusion on wine-tasting tours of the Yarra Valley, and for good reason. Swing by the cellar door to sample their popular Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon wines during a wine tasting overlooking the vineyards, or book a table at the winery restaurant for a delicious lunch of homemade Italian pasta paired with Fergusson wines. Most visitors to the Yarra Valley opt to visit between two and four wineries on a day trip.
Things to know before you go
Fergusson Winery is one of the Yarra Valley’s most popular wedding venues.
Although wine tastings are only available for over 18s, children are welcome to tag along and dine at the restaurant.
Reservations aren’t required for Cellar Door wine tastings but are highly recommended for the restaurant.
Cellar door tastings are provided for a fee, with a reduced rate for those dining at the restaurant.
The winery is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
How to get there
Fergusson Winery is along the Melba Highway in the Yarra Valley, less than a 10-minute drive north of Yarra Glen. It’s about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northeast of Melbourne, so a 1-hour drive. There’s no public transport to the winery, so most travelers opt to join a tour or take one of the hop-on, hop-off shuttles.
When to get there
Fergusson Winery is open year-round, but the cooler months of spring (September through November) and autumn (March through May) are ideal, and harvest season starts in March. The winery and restaurant are open from Wednesday through Sunday. The Cellar Door is open from 10am to 5pm, while the restaurant is open for lunch from 12pm to 3pm, and for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights only from 6pm to 9pm.
Things to do in the Yarra Valley
As Victoria’s oldest wine-producing region, it’s no surprise that wine tasting tops the list of things to do in the Yarra Valley. But in between wine-tasting tours, you can also go hiking and biking in the Dandenong Ranges; visit the lively markets of Healesville and Marysville; or enjoy an aerial view of the vineyards on a hot-air balloon flight. Or, if you’re not a wine lover, check out the region’s growing number of craft breweries and distilleries instead.
