Fish River Canyon

Windhoek, Namibia

The plunging walls and incongruous flatness of the surrounding landscape make Fish River Canyon a dramatic sight. Located in southwest Namibia, the canyon is one of the largest in the world and is a renowned destination for hikers looking to challenge themselves. The river comes and goes depending on rainfall, but the stunning canyon always remains.

The basics

The canyon stretches for 100 miles (160 kilometers) and the popular Fish River Canyon hiking trail covers 55 miles (88 kilometers). It takes most hikers around five days to complete the full trail, but many visitors come to enjoy shorter hikes or scenic drives. Hiking the full trail should only be attempted by experienced hikers, but Fish River Canyon is a great stop on a tour of the region if you’re looking for stunning vistas.

Things to know before you go

  • Those hoping to hike the full trail should book at least a month in advance, as limited passes are issued each month.

  • You’ll need a medical certificate from your doctor certifying your level of fitness before being allowed to hike.

  • Casual hikers should still wear sturdy shoes and light clothing that protects them from the sun. There’s little shade and temperatures can soar.

How to get there

From Windhoek, it’s a 6.5-hour drive via the B1 highway to Hobas Campsite, which marks the start of the trail. Hikers can leave their cars at either Hobas Campsite or the Ai-Ais Hot Springs, where the trail ends. A frequent shuttle runs between both sites so you can return to your car and rejuvenate at your chosen site.

When to get there

The canyon is open to hikers from May through September, when temperatures are low and the weather is dry. The cooler months of June and July are your best options for hiking. The daytime stays pretty hot, due to the lack of shade, but at night, it can dip to 40°F (4°C). Hiking isn’t permitted at other times due to the intense heat.

Other things to do in Fish River Canyon

If you’re not ready for the full trek, plan on making it to Sulphur Springs, which is around 18 miles (29 kilometers) away from the start of the trail. Here, a narrow stream of piping hot water feeds into a small pool to mix with the cooler water. If the water is high enough, you’ll find a stunning hot spring where you can soak surrounded by nature.
