POINT OF INTEREST

Florian Tower (Florianturm)

Florianstraße 2, Dortmund, Germany, 44139

The Florian Tower (Florianturm), Dortmund’s major landmark and TV tower, stretches skyward for around 656 feet (200 meters). The tower is located in Westfalenpark, a fitting location as it is named after the patron saint of gardeners and the park boasts beautiful gardens. Visitors usually take a quick trip up the elevator to the tower’s observation deck and then stroll around the surrounding sights of the park.

The basics

Westfalenpark is roughly a 30-minute walk from central Dortmund, so the park and its tower don’t feature on many guided city tours. However, there are hop-on hop-off buses that pass by en-route to Westfalenhalle and the Signal Iduna Park—home soccer stadium of Borussia Dortmund—so you can combine a visit with other Dortmund sights.

While the Florian Tower is the park’s big attraction, you can also find playgrounds, a mini-train, gardens, fountains, and the children’s museum Mondo Mio. There are also a few eateries on the park’s outskirts.

Things to know before you go

  • Combination tickets are available for both Westfalenpark and the Florian Tower.

  • Children under 6 years old can visit the tower free of charge, although strollers are not permitted.

  • Aim to spend around 30-minutes at the tower, to ascend and descend by elevator and admire the views.

  • There’s an eatery selling snacks at the base of the tower, which opens when there’s good weather.

  • Visitors with reduced mobility, strollers, and dogs aren’t permitted to climb the Florian Tower for safety reasons.

How to get there

From Dortmund, take the metro line U45 in the direction of Westfalenhallen or the U49 in the direction of Hacheney, and get off at Westfalenpark. Drivers can find paid lots at Parkplatz Florianstrasse or Parken Westfalenpark, which are both at the end of the park nearest the tower. Alternatively, there is free street parking nearby.

When to get there

During the summer vacation period, the Florian Tower is open daily from Monday to Friday, after lunchtime until early evening. On weekends and public holidays, there are extended opening hours from midday until the evening. Obviously, the best views are on clear, fair-weather days.

Mondo Mio for little kids

Close to the Florian Tower is the children’s museum Mondo Mio, which makes a great addition to any family trip. Entry is free, and there are sensory exhibits to touch, play with, crawl around, and enjoy—even if most of the information is only available in German. You’ll find exhibits about life and culture in other countries, and see items made from recycled materials.
