FoMu (FotoMuseum)
Waalsekaai 47, Antwerp, Antwerp Province, 2000
Housed in a former waterside warehouse in the hipster district of Zuid, Antwerp’s FoMu (FotoMuseum) has earned its status as one of the most important photography collections in Europe. Its clean, white lines are perfect for presenting a rotating exhibition of cameras, equipment, and photos by internationally renowned photographers, which changes every four months.
The Basics
FoMu (FotoMuseum) exhibits photographs sourced from its own collection, which includes work by renowned photographers such as Herman Selleslags, Frank Philippi, and Germaine Van Parys, plus a host of new and emerging talent from across the globe. It’s best to explore the museum independently at your own pace, though it does feature on the stop list of the Antwerp city sightseeing bus tour, which also covers top local attractions such as Grote Markt and Butcher’s Hall.
Things to Know Before You Go
- There’s a café at the museum, which serves food and drinks throughout the day.
- The gift shop sells quirky souvenirs that range from printed tote bags and calendars to DIY cyanotype kits.
- The museum is fully wheelchair accessible.
How to Get There
The closest stops to the museum are Antwerpen Pacificatie tram stop, on the blue line 4, a 10-minute walk away, and Antwerpen Groenplaats, covered by bus route numbers 22, 181, and 182, which depart regularly from Grote Markt.
When to Get There
FoMu is open Tuesday through Sunday, from mid morning until evening. Like the majority of Antwerp’s museums, it’s closed on Mondays. Between exhibitions, the museum closes temporarily to curate new works—check the website for its schedule.
Antwerp’s Modern Museums
Offbeat and avante-garde—just like the city it resides in—the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (MHKA) is a cutting-edge creative space that keeps its finger on the ever-changing pulse of modern art. It’s the ideal way to continue your artistic odyssey in Antwerp, with permanent exhibitions featuring works dating from the mid-’60s to present day.
