POINT OF INTEREST

Fornillo Beach

Positano, Amalfi Coast, 84017

Despite being the second-largest beach in Positano, Fornillo Beach still manages to retain its status as a local, quasi-hidden gem. Tucked away between two cliffs—and accessible via many steps down from Positano’s main stretch—the pebble beach is beloved by locals for its crystal-clear waters, relaxed atmosphere, and traditional lidos.

The basics

Fornillo Beach is the perfect retreat for those seeking a more laid-back experience in Positano. Less crowded than Spiaggia Grande, this beach is ideal for families, couples, or solo travelers looking to unwind. The shoreline is lined with several lidos offering umbrellas, loungers, and refreshments, as well as public areas for those who prefer a more independent setup.

Visitors can enjoy swimming in the calm, turquoise waters or savoring local specialties at one of the beachside restaurants. Fornillo Beach is often included in guided walking tours of Positano, and some boat tours of the Amalfi Coast also offer swim breaks here, making it a convenient addition to any itinerary.

Things to know before you go

  • Access to Fornillo Beach requires about a 10-minute walk from Positano’s main beach (including stairs), so wear comfortable shoes.
  • The beach is not wheelchair accessible due to steps and uneven paths.
  • Bring water shoes, as the pebble shoreline can be tough on bare feet.
  • Public restrooms and showers are available at the lidos.

How to get there

Fornillo Beach is accessible via a scenic pathway from Spiaggia Grande, Positano’s main beach. The walk takes about 10 minutes and offers stunning coastal views—just note that the walk includes some lengthy stairways. For those arriving by ferry, Spiaggia Grande is the nearest docking point. If driving, parking is limited, so plan to use public transportation or join a guided tour.

When to get there

The best time to visit Fornillo Beach is in the morning or late afternoon when the crowds thin out, and the light is perfect for photography. Summer months are busiest, but visiting in spring or early fall provides a quieter experience. Avoid peak midday hours in summer to escape the heat.

Dining at Fornillo Beach

Fornillo Beach is home to several charming beachside restaurants serving fresh seafood, pasta, and classic Italian dishes. Some such as Da Ferdinando offer tables with panoramic sea views—perfect for a leisurely lunch or sunset dinner. Don’t miss the chance to pair your meal with a refreshing limoncello or a local wine for a true taste of the Amalfi Coast.
