POINT OF INTEREST

Fort Hamilton

Happy Valley Road, Hamilton

Overlooking Hamilton City from its hilltop perch, the cannons and ramparts of this Victorian fort were built to deter enemy ships, and have remained unused and intact since. Nowadays, the site is more popular for its greenery than its battlements—it entices visitors with its tranquil moat garden and panoramic city views.

The basics

While some small placards give the lowdown on Fort Hamilton’s history as a former British garrison, the site is primarily used as a public park—albeit with centuries-old artifacts, underground passageways, grottos, and fortifications. Hamilton sightseeing tours don’t often pass by, but the fort is conveniently located only 30 minutes from downtown Hamilton. Families especially love this lush city oasis, with its Jurassic Park-like greenery around the moat walk and picnic areas. Kids can burn off excess energy on the quiet upper lawns.

Things to know before you go

  • A visit to the fort requires some walking, with a steep hike up King Street to enter, and a circular moat trail once you’re there. Comfortable shoes are ideal.

  • Wheelchair users will find the site difficult to navigate, as there are steps to the vantage points and a narrow moat path.

  • Fort Hamilton has no admission fee.

  • The underground passageways may make you feel claustrophobic.

  • There are public restrooms, picnic benches, and a drinking water fountain.

  • Pesticides aren’t used in the park, so bug spray is a good idea in the summer months.

How to get there

Fort Hamilton is on Happy Valley Road in Hamilton City. Like all city attractions, the best way to reach it is on foot. Follow King Street up the steep hill, then turn right onto Happy Valley Road. The fort is on your right-hand side. Most will find it an easy walk from the downtown area, but if you prefer to avoid the hill there are free parking spaces for scooters.

When to get there

The site is open year-round from morning until early evening. If you find yourself in Bermuda between November and March, it’s worth knowing that a pipe band performs for free at the fort most Mondays at noon. Known as the Skirling Ceremony, the performance features bagpipe music by the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band.

Look out for Fort Hamilton events

Keep an eye out for events and activities taking place in the park, especially during the summer months. Past events have included Shakespeare productions such as The Tempest and Macbeth, with the fort ramparts providing an atmospheric backdrop.
