POINT OF INTEREST

Fort Scaur

Scar Hill Park, Somerset

Set on the crest of Somerset Island’s highest hill is Fort Scaur, a site built to protect the nearby Royal Naval Dockyard from invasion after the American Civil War. Like many of Bermuda’s battlements, the fort didn’t see much action—but it’s impressive nonetheless. It’s also known as one of Bermuda’s top vantage points, with far-reaching views.

The basics

Fort Scaur is a popular deviation for hikers and cyclists following the Railway Trail—bike tours sometimes stop at Fort Scaur toward the end of the ride. Many people come just to soak up the views and enjoy a picnic—but if you’re interested in Bermuda’s military past, you can check out the remaining cannons; pass along the dry moat and subterranean passageways; and peek into the gun emplacements. The fort often appears as a stop on west Bermuda shore excursions or island tours.

Things to know before you go

  • Located just a few miles from the Royal Naval Dockyard, Fort Scaur works well for cruise ship passengers who have a few hours free for a visit.

  • Fort Scaur is a pleasant picnic spot, especially for hikers on the Railway Trail who are looking for a scenic outdoor seat for lunch.}

  • The best ocean views are from the bench at the top of the grassy bank on the side of Ely Harbour.

  • Fort Scaur has visitor amenities such as picnic tables, benches, a public dock, and restrooms.

  • There are information boards around the parkland and fort that explain most points of interest.

How to get there

Fort Scaur is at the western end of Bermuda, off Somerset Road in Sandy’s Parish. There’s a parking lot if you’re driving, and you can also take the public bus route #7 or #8 which both travel between the City of Hamilton and the Royal Naval Dockyard.

When to get there

The whole site at Fort Scaur is open daily year-round. Just note that the actual fort itself is open from morning to late afternoon, while the surrounding grounds stay open until the sun goes down (tip: this is a good spot to see the sunset). Birders might want to time a visit for the fall when Fort Scaur’s higher ground attracts more migratory birds.

Where to see the Bermuda Weather Stone

At the entrance to the fort, visitors can catch sight of an early Bermuda weather stone, which simply indicates the current weather. There’s a tongue-in-cheek explanation next to it, helpfully noting “If ever it is white on top… believe it or not… it is snowing.” Note that it never snows in tropical Bermuda.
