Frangokastello
Chania, Crete
Discover a historic landmark dating back to the 1370s during a visit to Frangokastello, a well-preserved castle. Built by the Venetians when their empire ruled Crete, this fort is known for its sawtooth walls and square towers at each corner. Nearby beaches are also a draw for visitors, and the small town offers peaceful seaside accommodations.
The basics
Originally called the Castle of St. Nikitas, this landmark was renamed by locals to Frangokastello ("Castle of the Franks," as in foreigners). Check out the carving of the winged lion of the Venetian Republic that can still be seen above the entrance to the castle. Several tour options in Crete include a visit to Frangokastello, including off-road safari tours and hiking excursions.
Things to know before you go
Frangokastello is a must-see attraction for history buffs and families seeking educational experiences.
Uneven surfaces and stairs make this landmark largely inaccessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
Bring your bathing suit, and after visiting the castle, go down to the nearby beach for a swim. The beach is also a lovely spot for a picnic.
Come prepared with a hat, plenty of sunscreen, and water.
How to get there
Frangokastello is on the southern coast of Crete, and the town of Hora Sfakion is about 7 miles (12 kilometers) to the west. Most visitors arrive as part of guided tours or via their own rental vehicles.
When to get there
The most popular time of year to visit Frangokastello is from May through October, with peak season during the summer. Travelers looking to avoid the crowds and the high temperatures may want to plan a trip during the spring or fall.
19th-century history
In addition to its 14th-century origins, this castle also played a more modern role in history as the site of the 1828 Battle of Frangokastello during the Greek War of Independence. This siege lasted for a week, as Turkish forces attacked Cretan soldiers who had bunkered down within the fortress walls.
