Franklin Mountains State Park
2900 Tom Mays Park Access Rd, El Paso, TX, 79911
Franklin Mountains State Park offers exquisite desert landscapes, rugged mountain trails, and acres of exploration just north of El Paso, Texas. Popular for hiking, biking, and rock climbing, it features over 100 miles (160 kilometers) of trails of varying difficulty levels. Visitors can also enjoy relaxing views, wildlife spotting, and stargazing. And with nice weather year-round, this spot is always in season.
The basics
Franklin Mountains State Park is one of the largest urban parks in the US—it’s technically within the city limits of El Paso. Since it’s part of the Chihuahuan Desert, visitors can spot barrel cactus, yucca, Mexican and California poppies, plus mountain wildlife such as mule deer, mountain lions, ring-tailed cats, golden eagles, owls, and hawks.
The park is largely undeveloped, which makes it perfect for ATV/UTV tours and rentals, as well as long-distance hiking and biking. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place to do it.
Things to know before you go
Bring plenty of sunscreen and water—this place is rugged, at times desolate, and can get quite hot.
A gift shop, ranger’s office, and restrooms can be found right inside the park entrance.
As usual, stay on the trails and leave only footprints; any dogs need to be kept on a leash.
How to get there
To reach Franklin Mountains State Park, drive north from El Paso on US Highway 54 and exit at Transmountain Road (Loop 375). Follow the signs to the park's Tom Mays Unit, the main entrance, where ample parking is available. You could technically nab a taxi or rideshare, but driving is recommended for easy access to the park’s trails and facilities.
When to get there
The park is open year-round, and the gate is typically open every day from morning to very early evening, with extended morning hours in the summer. Early mornings and late afternoons are ideal for visiting, offering cooler temperatures and better chances for wildlife spotting. As for time of year, spring and fall provide the most comfortable weather for outdoor activities.
Into the wild
Franklin Mountains State Park is worth your time, especially if you can head out on an ATV/UTV to get deep into the Texas backcountry, far from the crowds. Or, if you’re on foot, head to one of the park’s walk-in campsites, where cars aren’t allowed. Either of these ways, you’ll find one thing to be true: Everything really is bigger in Texas.
