Freedom Square (Vabaduse väljak)

Vabaduse Väljak, Tallinn, Estonia, 10142

Tallinn’s central plaza—Freedom Square—is located in the southern part of the Old Town. A popular meeting spot for locals, it’s also used for concerts and state events. Home to the Victory Column—which commemorates the Estonian War of Independence—visitors can also discover art deco and functionalist buildings, art galleries, and cafes.

The basics

As Freedom Square is located in the historic Old Town, it's easy to find if exploring the city independently. It’s also a common stop on Tallinn Old Town walking tours; these tours typically showcase the old city walls and defense towers, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Toompea Castle, and St. Catherine's Passage. Another way to see Freedom Square is during a panoramic driving tour with walking segments along the way.

Things to know before you go

  • Freedom Square is accessible for wheelchair users.

  • Don’t miss St. John’s Church, located on Freedom Square—a wheelchair-accessible building and a beautiful example of neo-Gothic architecture.

  • The square is home to many restaurants and cafes, making it an excellent spot for people-watching and taking a break from sightseeing.

When to get there

Being a public space in the open air, Freedom Square is open 24 hours a day and is a lovely spot for grabbing a coffee and relaxing in the afternoon. It’s a great idea to check event schedules before visiting, as the square often hosts events—including ceremonial parades, concerts, and festive celebrations.
