Fremantle Markets

South Terrace, Fremantle, Perth, Western Australia, 6160

Housed in a Victorian marketplace more than 100 years old, the Fremantle Markets are a Western Australian institution. A visit to the markets offers not only the chance to shop for fresh food and unique gifts, but also to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the entertainment offered by a rotating schedule of street performers.

The basics

The legendary markets feature more than 150 stalls split between two sections: the Yard and the Hall. The fresh-produce section in the Yard is a great place to stock up on supplies, particularly organic produce, if you are self-catering, while the food court features excellent street food from around the world. In the Hall, you’ll find clothing and accessories by local designers, including items crafted by Indigenous artisans; unique art and handicrafts; great-value cosmetics and toiletries, and a myriad of souvenirs.

Sightseeing tours of Freemantle often include a stop here. Visiting with a tour guide is a great way to source insider knowledge on the best vendors to visit.

Things to know before you go

  • Check the markets’ website for a list of vendors and the market map.
  • You can also see the buskers’ schedule on the markets’ website.
  • The floor is uneven in some areas, which may present challenges for wheelchair users.
  • The markets are free to enter.

How to get there

Fremantle Markets are located on the corner of Henderson Street and South Terrace in Fremantle, within a short walking distance of such major sights as the Freemantle Prison. From Perth, it’s around a 20-minute journey on the number 998 bus.

When to get there

The markets are open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from morning until evening. They are typically at their busiest around lunchtime and in the early evening.

Wildlife Zoo and Market Fairies

On Fridays, West Oz Wildlife, a Perth-based wildlife petting zoo, sets up at the Fremantle Markets providing the opportunity to get up close to native Australian animals such as koalas, snakes, and dingoes. On Saturdays and Sundays, the Market Fairies appear, distributing random acts of kindness, as well as face painting and balloon twisting for younger visitors.
