Frigate Bird Sanctuary
Codrington Lagoon, Codrington, Barbuda
The tiny Caribbean island of Barbuda has an outsize claim to its name: the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, home to the largest population of frigatebirds in the Western Hemisphere. Situated within Codrington Lagoon National Park’s mangrove forests, the 5,000-bird-strong colony is most popular in the winter when the male birds’ unique mating ritual is on full display.
The basics
Unlike its twinned island of Antigua, modest Barbuda offers a low-key, tranquil sightseeing experience—until you head into the Frigate Bird Sanctuary. In the prime of mating season, its resident male birds inflate red pouches on their throats and rattle their beaks to woo passing females; the result is a loud racket and a unique nature-viewing experience.
Most visitors come up from Antigua for the day to explore, whether by 1.5-hour ferry, private boat tour, small plane, or helicopter. The only way to visit the Frigate Bird Sanctuary is to book a licensed tour or sea taxi, which typically depart from the nearby Codrington jetty. While you’re nearby, don’t forget to soak up the scenery of 17-Mile Beach.
Things to know before you go
Frigate Bird Sanctuary tours are in high demand; it’s recommended to book yours via the local tourism office or your hotel at least one day in advance.
You need to pay a small fee to enter Codrington Lagoon National Park.
While some travelers opt to stay in Barbuda, it has very limited hospitality options compared to Antigua.
How to get there
The Frigate Bird Sanctuary is in Codrington Lagoon National Park in Barbuda, in the island’s northwest. Making the 28-mile (45-kilometer) journey to the island by ferry or sea taxi from Antigua is the easiest way to get there, but the sanctuary can only be visited with a licensed operator.
When to get there
The most popular time to visit Barbuda’s Frigate Bird Sanctuary is during the birds’ mating season, from November to April; December is considered peak season. Most visitors take a day trip from Antigua, and it’s worth leaving early to make the most of your time in Barbuda.
Local wildlife highlights
It’s no surprise that the Frigate Bird Sanctuary is a popular destination for birdwatchers, but they don’t just come to view the titular species. The sanctuary is home to around 170 bird species, including rare birds such as the West Indian whistling tree duck and the Barbuda warbler. It’s also frequented by sea turtles, sharks, and other marine wildlife.
