POINT OF INTEREST

Galway Latin Quarter

22 High St, Galway, Ireland

Galway's Latin Quarter is a pedestrian’s paradise. The streets of this part of the Irish harbor city are lined with restaurants, pubs, arts-and-crafts tables, and other souvenir shops. It’s a wonderful area to take a break from the water and roam shops selling specialty, hand-crafted pieces, and then pop into a restaurant or pub for a traditional Irish meal.

The basics

The Latin Quarter of Galway is only for pedestrians, so be prepared to walk among the masses as the area can get very crowded. Many Galway and Wild Atlantic Way tours stop at the Latin Quarter and give you free time to shop or to grab a bite to eat. You’ll want to carve out at least a few hours out just to explore the Latin Quarter and add some more time to walk by the coast.

Things to know before you go

  • The Latin Quarter is where you’ll want to spend your money if you’re looking for authentic Irish jewelry, crafts, or glassware.

  • Quay Street is quite lively at night, but a day trip allows you to visit the seashore as well.

  • Plan to walk a lot at Galway's Latin Quarter, so wear comfortable shoes.

How to get there

The easiest way to get to Galway is either to drive yourself or to book a tour that takes you there. Most tours pick you up from Dublin to take you to Galway. You can also take the Irish Rail from Dublin to Galway or take a direct bus trip from Dublin Airport to Galway when you arrive in Ireland.

When to get there

Galway’s Latin Quarter is usually busy any time of the day or night. However, when planning a visit, keep in mind that summertime is always busiest and the nighttime will have more local, live music playing on the streets than in the daytime, meaning more noise.

Enjoy a calmer day a county away

Just outside County Galway in County Mayo lies the adorable, country village of Cong. Spend a day visiting its top attractions such as Ashford Castle, Cong Alley, and the Quiet Man Museum, and grab a bite to eat. Then stay overnight in this peaceful village before moving on to your next destination in Ireland.
