Garden of the Groves
Freeport, Grand Bahama Island
This 12-acre (5-hectare) park was dedicated in 1973 to the Groves who founded Freeport. Walk the idyllic botanical garden to take in the lush plant life, native animals (including macaws, alligators, and iguanas), and, of course, snap plenty of Edenic photos.
The Basics
The Garden of the Groves is one of the most popular attractions on Grand Bahama Island and often features on sightseeing tours of Freeport. Come to walk the gardens, which includes a limestone labyrinth inspired by the one at France's Chartres Cathedral, and take advantage of its playground and petting zoo with pot-bellied pigs and pygmy goats. A certified U.S. Wildlife Federation Wildlife Habitat, the garden is a popular spot for birdwatchers looking for indigenous and migratory birds.
Things to Know Before You Go
The Garden of the Groves is a must-visit for families, nature enthusiasts, and first time visitors.
Remember to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
Visit the outdoor cafe to sample seasonal ingredients sourced from the garden.
Peruse the garden's shops and galleries, which display local arts and crafts.
The site's main paths are wheelchair- and stroller-accessible.
How to Get There
The gardens are located about a half-hour's drive from central Freeport. The best way to get there is by taking a taxi or joining a guided sightseeing tour.
When to Get There
The garden is open from morning through midafternoon daily throughout the year. Mild temperatures year-round mean it's always a pleasant time to visit the outdoor attractions, though rainfall is common between May and October.
Nearby Things to Do
Don't stop your adventures at the garden. Nearby Peterson Cay National Park is on a tiny island off the south shore of Grand Bahama. It's the smallest national park in the Bahamas and a great spot for snorkeling. For a different kind of fun, head to Pirate's Cove Zipline and Waterpark, a 7.5-acre (3-hectare) adventure theme park that offers food, a zipline, and water activities.
