Garmisch-Classic Ski Area

Drehmöser 7, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, 82467

With nearly 25 miles (40 kilometers) of runs across four valleys, the Garmisch-Classic Ski Area offers incredible access to the Bavarian Alps. Skiers and boarders of all skill levels will find themselves careening on the slopes of three peaks, stopping for drinks at various mountain stations, and taking in some of Germany’s highest views.

The basics

The Garmisch-Classic Ski Area comprises three mountains: Alpspitze at 8,622 feet (2,628 meters), Hausberg at 4,297 feet (1,310 meters), and Kreuzeck at 5,416 feet (1,651 meters). Though this area has options for beginners, intermediates, and experts—and each peak is serviced by a cable car—this alpine ski area is best known for its more difficult slopes. The most famous run is Kandahar with its 5,905-foot (1,800-meter) difference in altitude, a slope length of 4.3 miles (7km), and a 92% gradient “freefall” section.

Non-skiers can stay just minutes away in the town of the same name, Garmish-Partenkirchen, and have plenty to do—namely, touring the historic old town, visiting nearby Neuschwanstein Castle, and more.

Things to know before you go

  • Single tickets are available for purchase; the Garmisch-Classic Ticket allows visitors access to all three cable cars and all three slopes.

  • Each mountain has at least one beverage station for hot drinks and the chance to warm up.

  • For little ones, Garmish-Classic offers a designated children’s area, plus ski lessons.

  • This spot can get quite busy—be prepared for lines at multiple points.

How to get there

If you have a vehicle, parking is available at the base station for the Alpspitzbahn, Kreuzeckbahn, and Hausbergbahn cable cars. Otherwise head to the Garmisch-Partenkirchen main train station, where you can take the Zugspitzbahn railway to all three cable cars.

When to get there

In two words, come early. Like any popular ski resort, you’re going to run into lines at the cable car, the refreshment stands, and on the lifts, so try your best to beat the crowds and get to the powder at its freshest. Ski season typically runs from December to March, though check local weather conditions before your visit.

In the shadow of Zugspitze

The Garmisch-Classic Ski Area comprises the three mountains just below Germany’s highest peak: the famous 9,717-foot (2,962-meter) Zugspitze. The Zugspitze glacier ski area has an even longer season—it runs until May—and has options for all proficiency levels. Zugspitze is also great for non-skiers, as plenty of tours and après-ski options make it fun and accessible for all.
