POINT OF INTEREST

Government House

1451 Barrington St., Halifax, NS, NS B3J 1Z2

This stately Georgian manor is surrounded by carefully tended gardens and lush lawns, and serves as the official residence of the Canadian monarch when in Halifax. Built primarily using local materials and centrally located in downtown Halifax, the historic house highlights Nova Scotia’s past and its rich culture.

The basics

Although the house is the full-time residence of the lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia, it’s open to the public for tours during certain times of year—and for specific public events. Available on a first-come, first-served basis, the guided tours depart every 30 minutes and cover the Main Foyer, Grand Staircase, Ballroom, Morning Room, Drawing Room, and Dining Room. They also give you the inside scoop on the house’s history.

Things to know before you go

  • Check the website before going to ensure the tours are running.

  • Parking is not available on site, so find parking in the surrounding neighborhood.

  • Pay attention to the artwork—the manor has several portraits by painter Robert Field.

How to get there

In downtown Halifax, the house is within walking distance of most downtown accommodation. You’ll find the manor across the street from The Old Burying Ground–a peaceful historic cemetery perfect for a stroll. The house itself is on the corner of Barrington Street and Bishop Street.

When to get there

Typically, tours of Government House are offered from Friday to Monday in September, from morning to midday. As the tours are free and operate on a first-come, first-served basis, it’s best to try to arrive early to ensure you make it in. Be sure to check the website ahead of time to confirm the most up-to-date schedule.

Time for tea

Government House hosts an annual garden party at the end of June, and invites the public to explore the grounds of the historic house while mingling with the lieutenant governor. The manor hosts other events throughout the year, such as evening talks with Nova Scotian musicians, scientists, athletes, and authors. The official Government House website has an event calendar—be sure to check it before you go.
