History of the Library
Archbishop William King left his collection of 6,000 books, once housed in Cashel Palace, to Theophilus Bolton in 1729 when he died. With the addition of Bolton’s own books, the collection almost doubled to its current size of approximately 12,000 books. Bolton left his entire collection to the diocese, and the University of Limerick took on the project of preserving the collection.
