POINT OF INTEREST

Gramercy Park

New York City, NY

Situated on Manhattan’s east side, north of the East Village and west of the Flatiron District, Gramercy Park is a leafy, upscale neighborhood known for its elegant architecture. At the heart of the neighborhood is a private park by the same name, only accessible to neighbors who have a key.

The basics

While you may not be able to enter the exclusive park, there’s still plenty to see in the Gramercy Park neighborhood. Walking tours are a good way to get familiar with the area and its history, and many include a stop at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site. Some include access to The Players, a private mansion-turned-social club on Gramercy Park South, and some also visit the adjacent Flatiron District.

Things to know before you go

  • The Gramercy Park neighborhood is ideal for history fans and architecture buffs.
  • Make sure to stop by Pete’s Tavern, which claims to be the oldest continuously operating bar and restaurant in New York City.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, as many walking tours will have you on your feet for a couple of hours.

How to get there

The Gramercy Park neighborhood is less than a 10-minute walk from Union Square and the 14th Street-Union Square subway station, a major hub on the 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R, and W lines. Neighborhood tours typically depart from Union Square or other points in the general vicinity.

When to get there

If you want to see inside the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site, plan to visit between Wednesday and Sunday, when it’s open to the public. You can enjoy wandering along the neighborhood’s historic streets, such as Irving Place, in all seasons.

The Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site

If you're interested in presidential history, don't miss the chance to visit the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site, housed in a recreation of the home where the 26th president of the United States spent his earliest years. It's free to visit, and 45-minute-long docent-led tours of the upstairs rooms of the house are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
