Gustaf Adolf Square (Gustav Adolfs Torg)
Gustaf Adolfs Torg, Gothenburg, Sweden, 411 06
Set along the Stora Hamnkanalen canal and home to some of Gothenburg’s most impressive buildings, Gustaf Adolf’s square (Gustav Adolfs torg) is one of the most visited in the city. Built in 1629 and known simply as Stortorget (Big Square) for two centuries, the square takes its name from the 17th-century King of Sweden, Gustavus Adolphus, whose statue stands at its heart.
The basics
Walking, biking, and city sightseeing tours all pass by Gustaf Adolf’s square, where you can admire the architectural landmarks and enjoy views along the Stora Hamnkanalen canal. On the north side of the square, the 17th-century Gothenburg City Hall is framed by neoclassical white pillars, while to the west, Gothenburg Law Court boasts a 20th-century annex designed by renowned architect Erik Gunnar Asplund.
Things to know before you go
Shoppers and foodies take note: The massive Nordstan shopping center is right next door, where you’ll find dozens of shops, cafés, and restaurants.
There is a city bike-sharing station on the square, and boat rentals are also available on the other side of the Fontänbron bridge.
The wide-paved plaza of Gustaf Adolf’s square is easily accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
How to get there
Gustaf Adolf’s square is located in the Nordstaden neighborhood of central Gothenburg, on the north shore of the Stora Hamnkanalen canal. It’s just a short stroll from the main shopping street of Östra Hamngatan and about a 5-minute walk from Gothenburg Central Station. Several tram lines and buses stop at the square; hop off at the Göteborg Brunnsparken stop.
When to get there
The square welcomes seasonal events throughout the year, including concerts in the summer and a Christmas market during the holiday season. Come on a sunny summer afternoon to stroll along the waterfront, then hop on a boat cruise, which leaves from the other side of the canal.
King Gustavus Adolphus
King of Sweden from 1611–1632 and one of the great military leaders during Europe’s Thirty Years’ War, Gustavus Adolphus founded the city of Gothenburg in 1621 as a royal trading colony. Legend dictates that the king rode up Otterhällan Mountain and pointed to the fields surrounding the canal below, saying, “The city shall be placed here.” Take a look at the king’s statue at the center of the namesake square, and you’ll notice how the statue’s finger points to the ground in honor of the tale.
