POINT OF INTEREST

Haeinsa Temple

1742-17 Gayasan-ro, Gaya-myeon, Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do

Nestled in Gayasan National Park, the colorful Haeinsa Temple complex boasts over 1,200 years of Buddhist history and two of Korea’s National Treasures. Visitors can happily pass a few hours wandering the spectacular UNESCO-listed grounds or, to become more immersed in the setting, experience an overnight temple stay (at an additional cost).

The basics

The Haeinsa Temple can be visited as a half-day excursion from Daegu, or included on a multi-day tour throughout Korea, which often includes a trip to Gayasan National Park. Toward the back of the complex are two National Treasures of significant cultural importance, including Janggyeong Panjeon, a set of rectangular buildings that house the Tripitaka Koreana, comprised of 13th-century Buddhist woodblock scriptures.

Visitors who stay overnight will be welcome to a Buddhist ceremony, outdoor meditation, and a tea ceremony, and have the opportunity to speak with the resident monks. The experience can be arranged individually or through a tour package.

Things to know before you go

  • Haeinsa Temple is still an operating temple for locals. Be mindful of visitors and practitioners who are praying inside different buildings. Many people do not appreciate having their spiritual experience interrupted by loud noises or having their pictures taken.

  • Always remove your shoes when entering prayer rooms.

  • Regular admission to Haeinsa Temple can be purchased on-site, whereas overnight temple stays should be booked in advance. The experience is often included in multi-day tour packages.

How to get there

For those staying in Daegu, the complex can be reached by taxi, car, or organized tour. In addition, a direct public bus regularly runs from Daegu Seobu Bus Terminal. The 28-mile (45-kilometer) trip can take anywhere from 50 to 90 minutes, depending on the mode of transportation.

When to get there

Haeinsa Temple is open year-round, and like most attractions in Korea, it’s most popular in the spring and autumn, when the lush foliage enhances the whole complex. Open daily from morning to early evening, it’s best to visit the temple first thing to avoid the tourist crowds.

Explore the trails

Expand your visit to the temple with a hike through Gayasan National Park. A trailhead to the park is located just outside the Haeinsa Temple gates, and hikers can choose among various trails, depending on experience level and time constraints.
