POINT OF INTEREST

Haller Park

Majengo, Mombasa, Kenya

Set in a rewilded limestone quarry on the outskirts of Mombasa, Haller Park is home to a wealth of wildlife. Hippos wallow in cool ponds, giraffes graze on overhead leaves, tortoises amble through the undergrowth, and staff hand-rear rare butterflies in the butterfly pavilion. Many travelers love the chance to hand-feed the resident giraffes in the afternoon.

The basics

Home to crocodiles, a reptile area, a neglected fish farm, and more, Haller Park is a common stop on Mombasa city tours. Perhaps more impressive than the wildlife is the scale of the rewilding: The scarred landscape is alive with forest, grasslands, ponds, and bird life. There’s a significant charge to visit the park, with discounts for Kenyan residents, and some travelers opt to visit with a guide who can navigate ticketing and admission and look after transfers.

Things to know before you go

  • Haller Park is a good choice for families, people interested in conservation, and travelers who will not be taking a safari but would like to see wildlife.

  • Outside food and drinks are not allowed in the park.

  • The terrain in Haller Park is not wheelchair friendly. Parents will probably want to opt for slings or back carriers rather than strollers.

How to get there

Haller Park is about an 8-mile (12-kilometer) drive east of Mombasa’s train station. Mombasa’s matatu minibus routes are not traveler-friendly, and city driving can be terrifying, so most travelers opt to take a taxi, rideshare, or join a tour.

When to get there

Haller Park is open seven days a week from morning to late afternoon and is rarely crowded. If you plan to feed the giraffes, arrive around lunchtime or in the early afternoon.

Mombasa with kids

Kenya’s second city has plenty to offer traveling families, from a branch of the Kidzania interactive city for littlies to some of Africa’s best windsurfing for teens. Besides Haller Park, kids will be thrilled by Fort Jesus’ cannons and dungeons, while the Wild Waters water park offers epic slides and rides.
