Hams Caves (Cuevas dels Hams)

Carretera Manacor-Porto Cristo Km 11, Porto Cristo, Majorca, 07680

The island of Mallorca is home to more than 200 caves and the Cuevas del Ham, or Caves of Hams, are one of the most popular to visit. Located along an underground river called the Sea of Venice, these caves are notable for their spiral and hook-shaped stalactites. Many travelers visit these caves during a multi-destination day trip.

The Basics

Discover Mallorca’s famous underground system of limestone caverns during a tour of the Caves of Hams. Tours are short (under an hour) and include the chance to learn about stalactites and other exotic formations. Some people visit independently, while many join guided tours that include other island sites such as Cuevas del Drac, the resort town of Porto Cristo, and a pearl factory.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Caves of Hams are a must-see attraction for families seeking educational experiences and history buffs.
  • The caves are not accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
  • Wear shoes that are sturdy and closed-toed, and bring a jacket as temperatures can be cool in the underground caves.

How to Get There

The Caves of Hams are located a half-mile northeast of the resort town of Porto Cristo, on the road to Manacor. Tours of the cave are offered frequently throughout the day. Most visitors arrive as part of a guided tour, but some do arrive via taxi or with a rental car.

When to Get There

The caves are open all year round, with limited hours during the winter months. The most popular time of year to visit is during the summer months, when Mallorca experiences a boom in tourism. Travelers may want to book ahead of time during these peak months. To avoid the crowds, plan a visit during the shoulder season including the spring and fall months.

History of the Caves

Visit the Caves of Hams and learn about 10 million years of history. The caves were discovered in 1905 and for the last century visitors have arrived to explore. There are distinct sections to the caves including the Round Cave, an open-air cave that is home to birds and a distinct microclimate; the Main Cave with 12 galleries of stalactites; and the Blue Cave that is lit with LED technology.
